Who wants to win some Detergent!?

I find it kind of funny that my last post was about saving money by making my own laundry detergent, then within days my friends' Cloth Diaper Review blog All This Fluff does a review with a giveaway of another Earth/Diaper Friendly detergent (that I have been wanting to try, to see if it is any diff then Crunchy Clean) called Rockin' Green. It is amazing to me that the big name laundry soaps have not figured out that more of us want earth friendly & fun scents! If you would like your chance to win some free detergent then go over to All This Fluff (this is the direct link to the giveaway) & enter! You have 6 ways to enter earning up to 7 entries (2 for blogging about it!)! I glad they didn't add twitter to the ways to enter, because I am still protesting joining that (I'm not a Twitter fan in case you could not guess!)!

So why are you still here? GO ENTER! Good luck to us all!

Saving Money

My latest idea for saving money is to make my own Laundry Detergent that is safe for the cloth diapers we use. I had to really search the web to find one that did not have soap in it, since soap builds up on your clothes. The only one I found calls for Borax, which may not be good for cloth diapers! I had gotten some samples from Crunchy Clean it is made by a work from home mom. I love all the scents she has (she has somewhere around 75!)! Back at the beginning of February I purchased 1 "Popular Scent Sampler" ($5) It has 5 scents in it, that do 3-6 loads each for a regular washer, 6-12 for an HE (which we have). I also bought 2 Samples ($1.95), Vanilla & Cherry Almond, they each do 8-16 reg loads, 16-32 HE loads! We still have about 1/3 of these left, I would just order from her again, except shipping was $8 on this order (that is almost as much as the products themselves)! So this is why I'm looking into making my own. Here is the recipe I found online:

Homemade Laundry Detergent Recipe for Cloth Diapers:
(Powdered, 3 minutes to make)
If you desire a fragrance, add two drops of your choice of essential oil to the water before adding diapers

2 cups of Borax
2 cups of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (not baking soda!)
2 cups of Oxygen cleaning powder, such as Oxyclean

Mix well. Use 1 Tablespoon (15ml) for small loads & 2 Tablespoons (30ml) for large loads.
Store in recycled, air tight containers. (for HE machines you use 1/2-1 Tablespoon!)

Like I said, I don't want to use the Borax, also our local Walmart does not have Washing Soda, so I have to find that someone else! Crunchy Clean has both Washing & Baking in it, NO Borax! So the recipe that I want to try is about the same as above, except replace the Borax with Baking Soda. I also learned online that you can scent the powder by taking a Cotton Pad & dropping a few drops of essential oils on it, then place it in the powder in an airtight container for 24 hours, shake it, then let it sit for 24 more hours.

I have also learned via this link: For the Dishwasher's Sake, Go Easy on the Detergent
That we use too much detergent! There is a test in this articular where you take 1 towel for Reg machines & 4-6 for HE, put them in your washer WITHOUT soap & run the washer with Hot water & Med setting for 5 mins then check for suds. If you see suds you are using too much detergent! I did this & we had suds! It has been months since I have use regular detergent (before trying Crunchy Clean I tried Soap Nuts), but the suds were there! I have switched to only using 1/2 Tablespoon of Crunchy Clean (oh, in case you are wondering why it is called "Crunchy", this is the new word being used for those of us that are environmentally aware instead of "Green". I of course like Green better!).
